Cycle

East Devon has miles of bike paths for all types of cycling, set among some of the county’s most stunning landscapes. Whether you want steep hills, off road delights, or gentle roads, there is something for everyone.

A great place to see what rides are best suited to your level can be found on Komoot. Here you can scroll through the top 20 rides in East Devon. Or look at the 10 beautiful rides in our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Outdoor Active. Again search by East Devon.

The National Cycle Route 2 runs through East Devon with an absolutely delightful section that is almost entirely traffic-free and wonderfully level. The trail takes you right around the Exe Estuary from Dawlish to Exmouth, passing through the pretty villages of Starcross, Topsham and Lympstone to name a few.

The estuary is of international importance for wintering waders and wildfowl, supporting thousands of birds.  RSPB reserves near Topsham and Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve offer some of the best opportunities to view wildlife along the estuary.

By car: parking available at many places along the trail including Dawlish, Exeter, Topsham and Exmouth.

By train: railway lines run adjacent to trail, visit the Travel Devon website for stations and times.

By ferry: You can also use different ferries to take you across the estuary, from Starcross to Exmouth, Topsham to Exminster, Topsham to Turf Locks and Exeter Quay to Double Locks. Check Exe Estuary Management Partnership for more information.
